ACTIVITY FOR A GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT
An Encounter with Kenaf
In the spring of 1998, one of our club members came across an environmentally friendly plant called kenaf.
In the autumn of the same year, he attended the first Kenaf Summit in Hiroshima.
Since then, he has promoted kenaf in the Komagome Lions Club.
In May 1999, our club gave young kenaf plants and seeds to public primary and secondary schools in Bunkyo city.
From November 5
th to 7th 1999, our club hosted the Global Environmental Protection Fair in the Bunkyo City Meidai Lifelong Learning Center. This included an exhibition of kenaf and kenaf products as well as a demonstration of papermaking using kenaf pulp.
In March 2000, the club initiated the ‘One Kenaf Seed for One Bunkyo Resident Campaign’ with a donation of 170,000 kenaf seeds to Bunkyo city.
On May 19, 2000, Bunkyo city hosted a Green Concert to celebrate the anniversary of the inauguration of Civic Hall. Komagome Lions Club sponsored the concert and distributed kenaf seeds.
In September 2000, our club participated in the Bunkyo City Eco Recycle Fair. Our booth had another exhibition of kenaf, kenaf products and papermaking using kenaf pulp.
In October 2002, the club participated in the Shitamachi Festival at Nezu shrine in Bunkyo city and has been carrying out awareness campaigns and papermaking demonstrations at the festival every year since.
